As the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaches, it’s easy to lose sight of the spiritual significance of being thankful. Our minds often fill with to-do lists: Where are we eating? Which family members will we see? What do we need to bring? Should we order out this year? Will there be time to watch football? Are we decorating for Christmas too?
Those are all fair questions—but if we stop there, I think we miss the mark.
The phrase “give thanks” appears between 60 and 70 times in the Bible, depending on the translation (whatbiblesaying.com). Clearly, our Lord wants us to remember that giving thanks is a practice close to His heart.
Psalm 100:4 encourages us to “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name!”
Psalm 95:2 invites us to “Come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!”
And in Psalm 69:30, we are reminded, “I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify Him with thanksgiving.”
So why is it so important to give thanks to the Lord? The simple answer is—because He asks us to. Over and over again.
Giving thanks begins with a humble heart.
Wishing all our UBCA Families and Friends the warmest Thanksgiving blessings.
